A letter from America

A short one this week. For a good reason…

I’m writing this somewhere across the Atlantic, heading to the USA for the World Cup to see my home country, Scotland, in action.

By the time you read this, I'll already be in Boston, sitting in a pub somewhere near Fenway, almost certainly still hoarse from last night.

Scotland played Morocco at the World Cup on Friday. I was there with my 17 year old son and a group of friends I've known since I was 12 years old – a fireman, an air traffic controller, a property developer, a civil servant and me.

Five very different careers, one very old friendship.

It's been 28 years since Scotland last qualified for a World Cup. It could be another 28 before we do it again – and who knows where I’ll be or whether we'll even get there.

Last week's win was Scotland's first at a World Cup in 36 years. Thirty-six years. That’s a long time!

So no, this isn't a newsletter about business strategy, growth, AI, wealth planning or tax. There's no framework. No three-step plan. No downloadable template.

It's just this: I've had a great first half of the year. Busy, productive, really good momentum that's exciting to be part of. Met some great people, welcomed 12 new clients to Capital Partners, published lots of podcasts and started this newsletter!

And it would’ve been easy to stay glued to the laptop this week too – there's always another email, another client meeting, another prospect, another thing that feels urgent.

But some opportunities don't wait for a quieter month. My son won't be 17 forever. My friends and I won't always be fit enough, free enough, or daft enough to fly across the Atlantic for a football match. Scotland might not get back to a World Cup in our lifetimes!

So I went. Win, lose, or draw, we’re going to have the time of our lives.

The business will still be there when I get back. And I’ll be even more energised and productive after my trip.

My wish for you is to pause for a brief moment and consider this:

If you've got something on your bucket list this summer, something that matters more than the inbox - go and do it!

Your future self will thank you.

Until next time,

Alan

P.S. Next week I’ll be in Miami for Scotland v. Brazil, and so hopefully I'll have some useful updates and insights from there. Stay tuned.

We'll also be publishing the latest podcast episode on Thursday with an incredible female entrepreneur. Make sure you subscribe. It's well worth your time – I promise!
